Once you’ve found your accommodation in Tumut at Elm Cottage, and it comes to planning your holiday, the Tumut Museum, located just 20 minutes from Elm Cottage, is a sure inclusion.

Exhibiting collections since 1975, the Tumut Museum was formed by the Tumut & District Historical Society in 1962, and opened in its present Capper Street location in 1979.

The Museum’s focus is on its large collection of Miles Franklin memorabilia, historical photographs and agricultural machinery items from around the Tumut district, and is currently planning a “Doctors, Nurses and Midwives” exhibition, as well as collecting material to publish “Tumut – The Early Years”.

The last few years have seen the museum obtain several grants from the Tumut Community Foundation, meaning the refurbishment of museum rooms has gone ahead, and access to collections and display areas has been drastically improved.

A trip to Elm Cottage and the Tumut region wouldn’t be complete without exploring the region’s rich history, and where better to do it than the town’s very own museum, located on Capper Street, Tumut.
